Road safety charity TyreSafe is releasing new guidance for motorbike, scooter and moped riders in time for the start of the ‘motorcycle season’, as more riders take to the roads and enjoy the better weather and lighter evenings of spring.
The guidance comes after a surge in popularity of powered two wheelers (PTWs), with new motorcycle sales up 20% in 2024; December alone saw a 114% increase.
TyreSafe wants to make sure all these new riders – and lots of older ones! – have access to the very best tyre safety advice. While spring weather can be fine it can also be unpredictable, and as many bikes emerge from winter storage, regular tyre checks are essential for safe riding.
TyreSafe encourages all riders – from commuters to leisure riders – to check their tyres for air pressure, condition and tread depth before each ride. It’s particularly important to look for damage to tyres, such as welts or splits, as these can lead to a sudden blow-out that puts the rider in danger.
With 39% of the PTW market made up of smaller bikes, often ridden by less experienced individuals, it’s crucial to ensure tyres are roadworthy to prevent incidents.
TyreSafe's motorcycle tyre safety resources offer guidance on maintaining tyres for safe and sustainable riding. The materials are available to check out at
