New online training for pre-CBT riders

A free online training course has been launched for moped and motorcycle riders to complete before taking their CBT course.

Ridefree has been developed on the back of an award-winning project to help the Government look at how to deliver motorcycle training.

The project, carried out by the DVSA, Highways England and other partners including Agilysis, invited young riders across the East of England to take part in one of four alternative training approaches free-of-charge.

Participants first completed the training and then answered questions about how the course went, and motorcycling in general.

The new course contains five online learning modules covering:

  • The Highway Code and hazard perception
  • Clothing, equipment and the importance of maintenance
  • How a rider’s behaviour can affect them and other road users

The DVSA says the course is designed to help new riders prepare for a lifetime of safe riding.

Mark Winn, DVSA chief driving and riding examiner, said: “As motorcyclists are amongst the most vulnerable road users it’s essential they have the right knowledge and skills needed to stay safe on Britain’s roads.

“Getting the right advice from a professional instructor and the new ride free course helps new riders get the most from their CBT and should improve road safety.”
