Watch Out for the Bins!

2025 has kicked off with one storm after another, making riding conditions challenging to say the least. And from what the weather reports say, there’s more rough weather on the way.

We’ve talked about dealing with ice, snow, and heavy rain before, but today, let’s focus on something that catches many riders off guard: strong winds.

The Hidden Dangers of Riding in a Gale

Strong winds are often underestimated, but they can seriously impact control, visibility, and safety—turning even a casual ride into a battle against nature. Unlike car drivers, we bikers don’t have the luxury of a metal shell to shield us. A sudden gust can throw us off balance, making the bike unstable in an instant.

And it’s not just us. High winds affect all road users. Trucks, buses, and even SUVs can get pushed off course, especially on open roads or when crossing bridges. Now, picture yourself overtaking a high-sided vehicle when a gust slams into it… yeah, not a situation you want to be in.

What to Watch Out For

If you’re heading out on a windy day, be extra cautious in these high-risk areas:

  • Open roads and bridges – No windbreaks here, so gusts hit full force.
  • Exiting tunnels – The sudden exposure can catch you off guard.
  • Urban areas with tall buildings – Wind shear can create unpredictable gusts that hit when you least expect it.
  • Near large vehicles – Their bulk creates a temporary wind shield, but the moment you pass them, you’re suddenly exposed again.
  • Wind-blown debris – From fallen branches to loose packaging, be prepared for unexpected road hazards.
  • Bin day! – Empty bins make for unexpected projectiles in a strong gale. If you see one wobbling at the curb, give it a wide berth—no one wants to dodge a flying wheelie bin at 40 mph!

How to Stay Safe

  1. Manage Your Speed – The faster you go, the less time you have to react to sudden gusts or debris. Ride at a pace that gives you control.
  2. Stay Ready for a Buffeting – Keep a firm but relaxed grip on the handlebars and be prepared for sudden shifts in balance.
  3. Anticipate Wind Trouble Spots – If you know where gusts might hit hardest, you can brace yourself and adjust accordingly.
  4. Watch Other Road Users – Large vehicles struggling to stay in their lane? That’s your cue to give them extra space.

At the end of the day, we need to respect nature’s power. Adjust your riding style, stay alert, and ride smart. That’s how you keep yourself—and your bike—upright, even when the wind is doing its best to knock you off course.

Stay safe out there, and keep an eye on those bins!
