We lose an hour of precious sleep this weekend as the clocks go forward… but let’s be honest — the upside is worth it. Longer evenings, a bit of warmth in the air, and the promise of those brilliant summer rides ahead.
For riders like us, it means more opportunities to get out on the road and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. Whether we’re on a scooter, moped or motorbike, most of us will be riding a lot more as the days get brighter and the weather improves.
Before we head out on that first proper ride of the season though, it’s worth taking a few minutes to make sure both bike and rider are ready.
If the bike’s been tucked away through the colder months, give it a bit of TLC first. Work through the POWDERS checklist we shared earlier this month to make sure everything is road-ready — tyres, brakes, lights, fluids and controls all checked before we roll.
It’s not just the bike that may be a bit rusty though. If we’ve not ridden much over winter, it’s smart to ease ourselves back in. Maybe skip the mega ride on day one and start with something shorter while we get our feel for the bike back. Riding takes concentration and physical effort, and both can dip over winter.
If we’re commuting or heading out for a longer ride, remember to plan in a break. Fatigue creeps up quickly on two wheels, especially on the way home.
The clock change also means darker mornings for a while, so it’s worth checking our lights, indicators and brake lights, and giving the lenses a quick clean. A bit of hi-vis can make a big difference when the morning light is still a bit murky.
And don’t let that spring sunshine fool you — it’s still cold when you’re riding into the wind. Layers are your friend. A good jacket and trousers with warm layers underneath, proper gloves or gauntlets, and sturdy boots that cover the ankles will make the ride far more comfortable — and a lot safer.
And of course, a quality helmet that meets UK safety standards, properly fastened.
Most of all, let’s take it steady as we get back into the rhythm of riding. There’s no rush. Give those instincts a chance to wake up again and build the pace gradually.
The riding season is starting again — and we’re all ready for it.
Let’s make it a great season on the road… and a safe one too.
