How to spot a smidsy* incident before it happens to you.

* That stands for ‘SORRY MATE I DIDN'T SEE YOU’

Junctions are one of the most common places for motorcycle collisions. Six motorcyclists are killed every week, with hundreds more suffering serious injury, and many of these collisions occur at junctions

Many of the crashes follow the classic ‘SMIDSY’ route. A car or van turns right across the path of incoming traffic, only spotting the oncoming motorcyclist at the very last minute when there’s little chance of avoiding a collision. Even if the biker isn’t in any way at fault, it’s still them that comes off worse.

It’s no surprise, then, that junctions have been labelled ‘Bikers’ Number one trouble spot’.

So how can we avoid a crash? Fortunately there’s loads of great advice out there on how best to keep yourself stay visible to other road users, the best positions on the road and the most appropriate speed. We’ve produced some here at Good Egg.

One cracker is a short film fronted by DocBike’s blue light trainer Chris Smith. Chris, who has been training riders for the medical charity for years, offers some simple, no-nonsense advice that will help you stay visible and make you a better rider as you  steer clear of those cars and vans whose drivers just don’t want to see you.
