We are riders, so know what it feels like to be out there — exposed, alert, reading the road and everyone on it.
But here’s the reality we can’t ignore:
Recent research from Road Safety GB North East shows that half of serious crashes involving bikes happen because drivers simply didn’t look properly.
Between 2021–2025:
- 1,506 rider collisions
- 65 riders killed
- 772 seriously injured
And too often, it’s not speed. Not risk-taking.
It’s just this: we weren’t seen.
We are only a small part of traffic — but we make up a disproportionate number of serious injuries.
And more than half of those hurt are young riders — 16 to 24.
So this isn’t just statistics.
This is us.
RIDE LIKE YOU MATTER (BECAUSE YOU DO)
We can’t rely on being seen.
So we need to ride like we’re invisible — and make ourselves impossible to ignore.
- Make Yourself Seen
- Lights on. Always. Even in full daylight.
- Wear gear that stands out — not blends in.
- Add reflective elements to your bike and helmet — especially for side visibility at night.
You’re not just riding — you’re signalling “I’m here.”
- Own Your Space
- Ride where you can be seen — not hidden in blind spots.
- Don’t drift into the background of traffic.
- Be deliberate with your positioning — make drivers notice you.
If they can’t see you, they can’t react to you.
- Assume They Haven’t Seen You
- Expect the pull-out at junctions.
- Expect the late turn.
- Expect a mistake.
Not because drivers are all bad…humans miss things.
And too often, that thing is us.
- Junctions = Danger Zones
- Slow it down.
- Read every vehicle.
- Be ready to lose your right of way — even when it’s yours.
Most serious collisions happen here.
This is where awareness saves lives.
- Give Yourself Time to React
- Keep your distance — minimum 2–4 seconds.
- Build space so you can respond, not panic.
Time = options.
Options = safety.
- Check Before You Commit
- That quick shoulder check — your “lifesaver” — is exactly that.
- Never assume a lane is clear.
One glance can change everything.
So ride smart.
Ride visible.
Ride like they don’t see you
Because every ride should end with us getting home.
